50 Reasons:04

Sadly, Richard died last year. Ironically just as the Ian Fleming centenary events were happening. Seeing his original illustrations for the above book jackets at the IWM Bond exhibition were a real thrill for me. I think these images perfectly capture the sense of travel present in the Bond novels and remind me of the hot climate of the West Indies where some of the stories are set. They also have a surreal, sinister edge which is also very Bond.

50 Reasons: 03

It's just a pleasant 20 minute bus ride from the BVU to the steps of this magnificent structure. I'm not a particularly religious person (although I do believe faith can be both powerful and comforting) but whenever I've ventured inside this building I've often been overcome by a great sense of wonderment and awe.

50 Reasons: 02

Led the Count Basie Orchestra for 50 years. Franks favourite bandleader - listen to 'Sinatra at The Sands' for evidence of an artist at the top of his game. And who could possibly forget his cameo in Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles.

50 Reasons: 01

The first in an occasional series.

Why The Sea? We denizens of the Belle Vale Underworld have salt in our veins. My Grandfather served his country as a merchant seaman in World War II, survived the odd German torpedo and retired in the 1960s.

Hello!

Welcome to my blog. It seems terribly modern...

I'm from the North but live in the South and am now temporarily back in the North. Occupational factors have exiled me here in the Belle Vale Underworld until at least the end of November. These ramblings may sort of help pass the time during these quiet evenings and possibly soothe my intermittent homesickness.

Thanks for reading.
